Introduction

Madhya Pradesh, a large state in central India, retains landmarks from eras throughout Indian history. Madhya Pradesh is the second largest Indian state by area and the fifth largest state population with over 75 million residents. Madhya Pradesh state is made up of 52 Districts, which are grouped into 10 divisions. As of 2013, the state has 52 jila (district) panchayats, 376 tehsil, 313 janpad panchayats/blocks, and 23043 gram (village) panchayats. Begun in the 10th century, its Hindu and Jain temples at Khajuraho are renowned for their carvings of erotic scenes, most prominently Kandariya Mahadeva, a temple with more than 800 sculptures. The eastern Bandhavgarh and Kanha national parks, noted Bengal tiger sanctuaries, offer guided safaris.

MP Districts Regionwise - Divisions and districts​

There are 52 districts in Madhya Pradesh divided in ten divisions.[2][3] A new district, Niwari, was created in October 2018 by partitioning Tikamgarh district.[1]. Niwari was declared the 52nd district in 1 October 2018. And a bill regarding creation of 3 districts namely Nagda, Maihar and Chachaura-Binaganj was passed in 19 March 2020.

At current prices, Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of Madhya Pradesh was Rs 8.26 trillion (US$ 118.18 billion) for 2019-20. State’s GSDP grew at a CAGR (in rupee terms) of 11.71 per cent between 2015-16 and 2019-20. Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) of Madhya Pradesh was about Rs 8.27 trillion (US$ 117.32 billion) in 2019-20. Between 2015-16 and 2019-20, state’s NSDP grew at CAGR of around 14.21 per cent.

Key Sectors :

  • Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for the people of Madhya Pradesh. Primary sector’s contribution to the state’s GVA increased from 33.85 per cent in 2011-12 to 56.70 per cent in 2019-20.
  • Textiles industry is one of the key sectors of Madhya Pradesh. The state is one of the major cotton producing states in India. In 2018-19.
  • Cotton and silk production in the state reached 24 metric tonnes^ and 100 million metric tonnes, respectively. Export of cotton yarn stood at US$ 224.72 million in 2019-20, accounting for almost seven per cent of the state’s total export during the year.
During 2018, foreign and domestic tourists arrival in the state reached around 0.37 million and 83.97 million respectively

As of March 2020, Madhya Pradesh had a total installed power generation capacity of 24,821.05 MW, comprising 7,187.62 MW under state utilities, 6,868.38 MW under central utilities, and 10,765.05 MW under private sector.
The state is home to five operational SEZs, six notified SEZs, and 12 formally approved SEZs.
Merchandise export from Madhya Pradesh increased from US$ 4.13 billion in 2014-15 to US$ 6.38 billion in 2018-19. It stood at US$ 4.02 billion in 2019-20 (till December 2019).
According to Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) inflow in the state reached US$ 1,513 million between April 2000 and March 2020.
